About Nation Outside

Nation Outside is a statewide movement powered by people directly impacted by the criminal legal system. We work to transform lived experience into systemic change — breaking barriers, building futures, and advancing equity for returning citizens and their families.

With the successful completion of the Trauma-Informed Peer-Led Reentry (TIPLR) Pilot, we are entering an exciting new phase: scaling the model for replication across Michigan and building the systems and sustainability needed to support our long-term growth. Following a period of organizational restructuring, we are now focused on strengthening our core operations, investing in leadership, and positioning the organization for lasting impact.

As we grow, we are seeking a Development Director (Contract) to help us expand our funding base, elevate our story, and ensure that this work continues to thrive for years to come.

About the Role

This is a unique opportunity for a seasoned fundraiser or communications professional to make a major impact in a short time by helping us refine our message, engage supporters, and expand our funding base.

This is a three-month, part-time contract (approximately 15–20 hours per week), with the opportunity for renewal based on fundraising performance and funds secured.

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop and launch a 12-month fund development plan aligned with our 2025–2028 Strategic Plan.

  • Strengthen Nation Outside’s fundraising infrastructure, including donor database, communications calendar, and tracking systems.

  • Lead grant prospecting, writing, and reporting in partnership with the Executive Director.

  • Build and steward relationships with individual donors, foundations, and corporate partners.

  • Collaborate with the Communications Team to create donor-focused messaging, newsletters, and digital appeals that tell the story of our impact.

  • Support board and staff engagement in fundraising, building a culture of philanthropy across the organization.

Qualifications

  • Minimum of 3–5 years of nonprofit fundraising experience (grants, individual giving, and/or communications).

  • Proven track record of securing philanthropic support and building donor relationships.

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills; strong storyteller.

  • Self-starter with the ability to work independently and meet deadlines.

  • Deep alignment with Nation Outside’s mission and a passion for social and economic justice.

  • Lived experience with the criminal legal system is valued and encouraged.

Contract Details

  • Term: Three (3) months, with the possibility of extension based on funds raised to sustain the role.

  • Hours: Approx. 15–20 hours per week.

  • Compensation: Competitive monthly retainer, commensurate with experience.

  • Location: Remote; occasional travel to Detroit or Lansing for meetings or events may be requested.
